Case Study

Organisation: International Pharmaceutical company

The challenge:

The client was embarking upon a modernisation programme to drive improved safety and compliance across the business. A strategic initiative on reducing inventory buffers across the global supply chain was defined as an key enabler to free cash flow and fund the investment.

What we did:

  • Created a baseline of average inventory holdings over the previous three years
  • Facilitated workshops with the buying teams to define target holdings per stock keeping unit
  • Resourced and coached a new central inventory team
  • Delivered a Lean six sigma awareness programme for the Supply Chain Director and his senior team
  • Defined the criteria for a real-time KPI tracker for inventory holdings (cost, value, space utilisation)
  • Realigned the purchasing function from operational buying to strategic sourcing
  • Created a statistically based inventory model

The result:

The team delivered a 14% reduction in global supply chain inventory, beating stretch targets set by the board.
